The Netherlands’ first intelligent traffic light controller (iTLC) was put into service in Deventer in April. iTLCs offer many new opportunities for traffic management. MobiMaestro, Technolution’s traffic management platform is ready for the challenge! The first iTLCs in Deventer and North Holland were successfully connected to MobiMaestro this week.
Operate using MobiMaestro
Like many Dutch municipalities and provinces, the City of Deventer and the Province North Holland work with MobiMaestro. MobiMaestro is the first traffic management platform that is suited for the operation and configuration of iTLCs. All the iTLCs’ traffic data and configuration options can be accessed through the user interface. To make this possible, the standard protocols for data traffic (VLOG3) and communication (IVERA4) have been extended and adapted.
iVRI does more
Just like classic TLCs, iTLCs control the traffic lights at intersections on the basis of rules and scenarios. But they do more. iTLCs is able to communicate with road users through WiFi-P or via the cloud. For instance to relay time to red or green at a traffic light. In addition, the iTLC provides speed recommendations to ensure better flow. In the near future, self-driving cars will automatically adjust their driving behavior on the basis of information derived from the iTLCs. Thanks to the cloud connection, iTLCs can even support cyclists and pedestrians.
TLCs will be replaced by iTLCs at more than 1,200 intersections in the Netherlands in 2017 and 2018. iTLC technology will become the starting point for many new applications and the first step towards a smart city. MobiMaestro gives provinces and municipalities a flexible platform that offers full scope for creative software solutions for smart traffic management. We are proud to have been able to contribute to the development of smart cities.
