The Talking Traffic project permits road users, traffic lights, traffic control centers, and roadside systems to communicate with each other. This yields valuable data which makes it possible to provide every road user with travel information and advice, both before and during the journey, on the basis of his or her final destination. The final goal is to make journeys as quick and smooth as possible.
Talking Traffic is one of a number of big projects under the auspices of the Beter Benutten (‘Optimizing Use’) program. At the request of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment, public and private parties are working together on new ways of supporting road traffic, using smart applications on the basis of up-to-date travel information collected from a multiplicity of sources.
The project is divided into three big clusters: Intelligent Traffic Light Controllers (iTLC), Data (Data Service Hub), and Information Services (In Car). The iTLC cluster focuses on (further) developing traffic light controllers that actively communicate with traffic control centers and with the traffic. The Data cluster collects, analyzes, and enriches the iTLC data and other traffic-related data. The enriched data forms the basis for applications developed in the Information Services cluster. Technolution is contributing to the Talking Traffic project in the Data cluster.
Collecting and enriching data
37 use cases have been defined for Talking Traffic. In fifteen of these use cases, Technolution is responsible for collecting and enriching of data. The data is derived from iTLCs and many other sources, including the NDW (National Data Warehouse for Traffic Information), the NWB (National Road Database), the RDW (National Road Administration), but also TomTom (HD Traffic). We are using our traffic management platform MobiMaestro to enrich the data. The fifteen use cases can be broken down into the following three main subjects.
Map matching of road disruptions
Various data sources provide information about road disruptions, such as bridge openings, road works, stationary vehicles on the shoulder, calamities, and other incidents. We combine and enrich these data and match them to their precise location on the map. Information services use this as a basis to warn road users of disruptions, so that they can take appropriate and timely action.
Congestion detection in the data flow
By performing a mathematical analysis of the data flows we are able to show precisely where queues begin and end. This information can be used by in-car apps to warn drivers that their vehicle is approaching a traffic jam, and to recommend that they reduce speed or choose an alternative route.
Finally, we also combine and enrich data on parking facilities. This makes it possible to provide the road user with up-to-date information about parking at his or her destination, for instance the location of parking facilities, the number of spaces available, rates, temporary parking facilities at events etc.
Growing knowledge and experience
The Talking Traffic project is allowing all parties involved to obtain new insights. Our participation in the Talking Traffic project is generating a lot of new knowledge on the modeling of traffic flows and recognizing and predicting traffic jams on the basis of traffic data. We are using MobiMaestro to enhance our thinking about traffic networks, and to translate this into advanced scenarios. In this way, MobiMaestro will be able to offer better support and advice to traffic managers in traffic control centers.
We are working together in the Talking Traffic project with Dynniq, Vialis, and PTV on behalf of the KPN consortium in the Data cluster.
